We are frequently asked about firmware updates for HDMI switches, extractors or splitters. As users of computers and software programs ourselves, we are familiar with updates fixing bugs or continuously adding new features. As a result, users naturally want to have the latest update installed at all times.
However, this cannot be implemented in the same way for an HDMI switch and is rarely necessary. This is because the functionality of such an HDMI device is generally limited: an HDMI switch simply transmits the signals and does not process them.
What is a firmware update for?
1. In the past, firmware updates have enabled us to resolve problems that became known to us, most of which were related to compatibility with certain connected devices. A firmware update can therefore only solve a problem that is known and has been described. In a Readme.txt file, we describe what has changed.
2. With an HDMI splitter, HDMI matrix switch or HDMI audio extractor, a predefined EDID information setting (STD EDID) can also be changed. This function is used to force or limit the output of audio/video formats from the source device that are not supported by all devices. A firmware change can therefore alter the supported audio and video formats.
So there is no point in performing a firmware update simply in the expectation of improved functionality or to solve a problem that has not previously been described. The saying "Never change a running system" definitely applies here.
We are one of only a few manufacturers that offer firmware updates of this kind for HDMI devices. This is because we want to do everything we can to get the user's setup working as expected and to transmit the highest possible audio/video formats. This works well with our understanding users. It is important to know that this type of update is intended more for experienced users and that the update process is not as user-friendly as a beginner might expect. This is because these tools were developed for professionals. Nevertheless, we have decided to make such updates available for our devices.
Since the hardware of some devices has also changed over time, newer firmware is sometimes not compatible with an older device. This is also described in the update instructions or Readme file. Conversely, there may be no alternative firmware available for a newer device version simply because it is not necessary.
Where can I find updates?
In many cases, you can find our firmware updates as direct downloads on our product page under the "Downloads" tab. Instructions are included there, and the changes are described in the Readme file. There are also additional updates or alternative firmware versions that we provide in individual support cases. We do not want to make these generally available because incorrect use could render devices unusable, and they are needed relatively rarely. Please note that all firmware tools are available for Windows only, not for macOS or Linux.
What should I do if something does not work as expected?
Please check our Support page to see whether a solution or explanation is already available. If not, you can submit a ticket there. This will create a message for our support team, and we will take care of your question or problem. Please specify all connected or intended devices where applicable.
